Mafia: Definitive Edition might not be the most word-for-word retelling of the 2002 original’s ambitious story, but it certainly feels more true to the series’ utterly unique identity than anything released after 2010’s Mafia 2—with the numerous subtle changes to the game’s storytelling more firmly establishing the game’s time period and the devastating effects of the Great Depression. It is developer Hangar 13 confidently stating that, despite having previously made the worst game in the series (2016’s Mafia 3), they clearly understand what makes the series tick at its best—this is not only the definitive way to play Mafia 1, it’s arguably the definitive piece of crime fiction games have to offer. Grand Theft Auto V this ain’t!

Mafia: Definitive Edition (Remake) Review – The Final Verdict

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a worthy remake that does justice to the only unequivocally good game in the series, and the best, most consistent package the Mafia series has delivered since 2002.

It’s not devoid of issues, and I wouldn’t say it stands toe-to-toe with the best remakes we’ve seen this generation, like Resident Evil 2 or Shadow of the Colossus, but it’s a solid effort that fans of the original game will surely appreciate. It’s not an offer that you can’t refuse, but it’s one that you shouldn’t.
